In the Bible, tattoos are specifically prohibited in Leviticus 19:28 which states: “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.” This prohibition was based on the belief that the body is a sacred temple, and so any permanent alterations to it were considered blasphemous and a sign of idolatry. Tattoos were seen an an illustration of worshiping a false god, and as a sign of rebellion or paganism in general.
