Native Chin tattoos are traditional body markings of the Chin tribespeople of Burma (Myanmar). There are several different meanings associated with these types of tattoos, depending on the design. Generally, they are seen as symbols of social status, protection, strength, bravery, and ritualistic practices. In some cases, tribal elders will give a young Chin man or woman a Chin tattoo to mark a specific event or passage into adulthood. Furthermore, the tattoos can represent a personal experience or serve as a reminder of a particular teaching or hardship. In essence, each person’s Chin tattoo can be highly personal and is meant to have deep cultural and spiritual significance.
