Tear drop tattoos, also sometimes referred to as “tear drops” or “diamond tears,” are tattoos worn on the face that have come to represent a variety of themes. Originally, they referred to the idea of tears shed for a deceased loved one or for a particular tragedy that one has experienced. Now, however, the meaning of tear drop tattoos has come to represent a person’s history, their struggle and losses in life, and their strength and resilience. A tear drop tattoo can also signify regret, mourning, remembrance, and sorrow. They have also come to represent time served in prison, especially those that have been there for a long time. Recently, some have also adopted the meaning that the wearer has taken a life, usually in the context of being a gang member or criminal. In some cases, the tear drops can also represent perseverance and renewal, indicating that the wearer has endured hardships in life and emerged as a stronger, more resilient individual.
